📖 Clemency, power, and moral conflict
Composed in 1791 for the coronation of Leopold II in Prague with a libretto by Pietro Metastasio and Caterino Mazzolà, this two-act opera seria presents a solitary emperor. Wounded by betrayal, Tito responds with a clemency that becomes an emblem of higher political ethics.
The plot builds a striking contrast between the manipulative darkness of Vitellia and the torment of Sesto, torn between loyalty and desire, creating a psychological drama of exceptional intensity.
🎶 An acclaimed staging and musical performance
Originally created for the Aix-en-Provence Festival, David McVicar's staging features set designs by Bettina Neuhaus and David McVicar, costumes by Jenny Tiramani, and lighting by Jennifer Tipton.
The cast features Jack Swanson (Tito Vespasiano), Karine Deshayes (Vitellia), Marianne Crebassa (Sesto), Lina Johnson (Servilia), Marianne Beate Kielland (Annio), and Gabriel Rollinson (Publio), alongside the choir directed by Lluís Vilamajó.
✨ A magnificent opportunity to experience Mozart's operatic brilliance under the baton of Jordi Savall at the Liceu.
