📖 Expressionism, Social Reality, and Modernity
The exhibition delves into Sucre's two interconnected sides: visual artist and tireless cultural agitator. His painting, centered on expressive and primitivist faces, drew from the human misery he witnessed while working as a court clerk in Barcelona criminal courts. His canvases channel European expressionism, Catalan Romanesque art, and the spirit of painters such as Edvard Munch and Paul Klee.
Despite his vital contribution, Sucre received late and limited recognition, enduring severe financial hardship until his death—a reality documented in a 1964 audiovisual piece by Joan Francesc de Lasa.
🎨 A Bridge Across Catalan Avant-Gardes
Sucre served as an indispensable link connecting pre-Civil War avant-garde currents with post-war artists. Through the Cercle Maillol at the French Institute, he granted scholarships to Paris and helped launch the Salons d'Octubre. The display includes works by around thirty associated artists, such as Tàpies, Modest Cuixart, Ràfols-Casamada, Guinovart, Maria Girona, and Subirachs.
