📖 A comprehensive look at the life and work of Clavé
Although Josep Anselm Clavé (Barcelona, 1824–1874) is primarily remembered for founding a network of choral societies that remains active to this day, this project was part of a much broader life commitment. Driven by liberal and progressive ideals, his main goal was to transform the Kingdom of Spain into a democratic republic.
The exhibition chronologically explores his multifaceted endeavours: risking family assets to organize concerts, founding newspapers, creating music and poetry, and his charismatic political leadership, which repeatedly led to banishment, imprisonment, and exile.
🎨 Historical context and exhibition overview
The journey contextualizes Clavé within his political, social, and cultural environment. The narrative spans from his youth, influenced by Étienne Cabet's philosophical novel Voyage en Icarie, to his political roles during the First Republic.
✨ An exceptional opportunity to explore the musical and democratic legacy of one of contemporary Catalonia's great civic figures.
