📖 Experiments leading to the symphony

Before Beethoven dared to write a single symphonic note, he had to "tame" the musical forms established by Haydn and Mozart. This opening lecture analyzes how the piano served as the sketchbook in which Beethoven first dared to sound abrupt and emotional.

The session also examines how he transferred that energy into his string quartets (op. 18) and the Septet in E-flat major, op. 20, using them as a proving ground for musical structure, drama, and contrast before making his decisive leap onto the public symphonic stage.
